The Lacombe area is home to all kinds of attractions, from historical to agricultural, indoors and outdoors. Let’s get acquainted with some of the many attractions in Lacombe County...
Right in downtown Lacombe you can visit such historic sites as the Flatiron Building & Interpretive Centre, the Michener House Museum and the Blacksmith Shop Museum.
The 3-sided Flatiron Building is one of only 3 in Western Canada. Step inside and explore the unique history of Lacombe. Only blocks away, the Michener House Museum is the 100 year old home that was the birthplace to Roland Michener: Canada's Governor General from 1967 to 1974. Visit the Blacksmith Museum where working blacksmiths will take you back in time using turn-of-the-century techniques right in front of you.
Lacombe is also home to a network of pathways and trails, including a route that is part of the TransCanada Trail. When visiting Gull Lake you can use the paved path to walk or cycle to the town of Bentley.
Aspen Beach Provincial Park at Gull Lake is also worth a mention as it is Alberta's first provincial park. In addition to the two campgrounds, you can take advantage of the day-use campfire pits and the wide beaches with their warm, shallow water.
While you're out in the Gull Lake area, stop in at the Lacombe Corn Maze where the main attraction is the a-maize-ing labyrinth created out a corn field, but there's much more including a petting zoo, jumping pillow and a corn cannon!!
Ten minutes east of Lacombe you can find the Ellis Bird Farm, a working farm dedicated to the conservation of Mountain Bluebirds, Tree Swallows and other native bird species. After you visit the gardens and take a stroll on the walking trail, stop in at the charming teahouse for some homemade saskatoon pie and fresh-squeezed lemonade.
Another spot to do some nature-watching and hiking is the JJ Collett Natural Area where you can explore 635 acres of various terrain. The Natural Area is also a great spot to do some cross-country skiing in the winter.
For a trip back in time to the early days of the rural farm, you can go out to Alix and visit Morris Meadows, where overnight visitors can stay in a teepee or a sod house. Have a sarsparilla at the Happy Hallow Hotel and browse artifacts on display at the General Store.
